The same night of the De La joint, Muja Messiah, along with M.anifest and some other local crews got busy in the 7th St. Entry. Even Shock G., from the legendary group Digital Underground, stopped in to check out the show.
Muja was also joined by members of his Raw Villa family, Real Spit Rick and the homie Shionaes.
Here's some flicks:

20 YEARS AGO (it's still fuckin' with me saying that), one the freshest, most consistent groups in hip-hop music, De La Soul, dropped their first album. They came through First Ave. to celebrate.
Backed by a live band, the trio ran through a short, but sweet set - covering mainly the more popular joints, and steering completely clear of any newer material (I don't think I heard anything from The Grind Date or their latest, Are You In?
Here's some flicks though:

Without even having any time to recover, First Avenue played host to one of the greatest bands of our time, the legendary Roots crew. Although the side effects of gaining mass appeal were definitely apparent (what hardcore Roots fan that was down with them since the Organix days was begging for a "Sweet Child O' Mine" rendition?) - they still rocked it...

Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley went in on June 30 at First Avenue - ending the month on a high note, and setting up the holiday weekend quite nicely. They were more or less in town promoting their collaborative effort, a project they are calling Distant Relatives

If you don't know anything about the multi-talented musical wunderkind Karriem Riggins, who blessed the Dakota Bar & Grill by bringing the Karriem Riggins Virtuoso Experience through for a show on June 28, 2009.
Riggins was accompanied by Mulgrew Miller on the piano/keyboard, Joe Sanders on the bass, Warren Wolf on vibes, and DJ Dummy on the turntables.

Just when you thought June wasn't going to get any hotter, it went out with one helluva bang - the Twin Cities was on fire with all the events that were going down.
The Twin Cities Jazz Festival took place in St. Paul at Mears Park, and featured headliners Allen Toussaint on June 19, and Esperanza Spalding on June 20 (which I regrettably missed.

Uh-oh. MTV2 done messed around and gave extensive coverage to the SOUNDSET FESTIVAL that went down over the Memorial Day weekend in Shakopee, Minnesota (a few miles south and west of the Cities).
Does this mean that the Rhymesayers collective turn in their "underground" badge? Will they be able to resist the appeal of mass exposure?
Stay tuned...

An event that doesn't seem to get much publicity on any level (locally, nationally, or otherwise) - the Anuual Juneteenth Celebration - which is a commemoration of the freeing of slaves (in terms of it being actually against the law) that doesn't have an official date, due in large part to the fact that most black folks aren't sure when they were actually "freed".
But that's a subject in itself, and I want to keep the focus on the event that took place on June 14th, 2009 at Theodore Wirth Park in North Minneapolis. It was a lovely day, and the festivities started off just as well with an entertaining parade that travelled through the northside.
Here's some flicks to prove it:
